Drones – The Future of Advertising

The use of U.A.V. or drone technology has emerged at the forefront of the contemporary advertising strategy. This is in large part due to the great reduction in expense compared to traditional aerial filming with helicopters.

Helicopters vs. Drones

Due to the liability insurance that helicopters are required to carry, the costs involved usually skyrockets. In addition to the risk of life & limb driving up the insurance rates, the cost of fuel, maintenance and pilot/crew compensation costs also have to be figured in. If you were planning on making a professional video, you’ll likely have to pay for a gimbal system (in-flight camera turret/stabilization mount) and possibly a film and safety crew as well.

Usually, the startup cost for a helicopter production job would begin at $800/hr. There are also costs for services and time from the moment the chopper leaves the hanger until it powers down. The final cost for this type of production would be astronomical. In addition to the costs, there are other significant features for the use of drones.

Remote controlled drones can go where helicopters cannot. This includes the edge of cliffs, close-ups of buildings/structures, and shots amongst forest growth, below the tree line. Due to their small size & maneuverability, drones have made a previously impractical shot and angle spectacularly attainable, enriching the possibilities for innovative content with minimal noise and disruption.

Needing a retake of a shot with a helicopter is a big deal, it requires a lot of time and effort and often times the camera-operator is in the chopper while the director is on the ground. Other factors like weather, pilot error, and radio miscommunication can make a second-take into a daunting task. For the most part, a retake with a drone will only possibly require you to pop in a new battery. Overall drone technology is exceptional and less costly. Our staff has vast experience with the use of drones and has created amazing work for our clients.
